Great Wall Of China
The Great Wall of China
The Great Wall of China is a defensive wall that was created more than 2,200 years ago so that Inner China and Outer China are protected from northern nomads. The first Great wall was built out of pounded Earth in wooden frames. It also circled all the entire northern perimeter of China at first. The wall we know today was built by later rulers. The first Great Wall took 300,000 workers 10 years and tens of thousands of deaths of workers. It was built by Emperor Qin of the Qin dynasty. Combined by the strong Chinese armies, the wall proved to be very effective. The Great Wall was many walls spanning the entire northern border. It was too high for horses to jump over or herd cattle over making the people who jumped over the wall with no supplies or horses. The Chinese called it the 10,000 Li Long wall until 100 years ago. A Li is around a third of a mile. Qin ordered the walls not on the northern border torn down and the walls on the northern border connected by building a wall connecting the walls. This was the first Great Wall. Stone was used when it could be used, otherwise they used pounded earth. Sometimes the wall was broken. Later, the dynasties repaired and added onto the wall. By the 13 century, the Mongols conquered China by going around the wall where there were no walls. By the 16th century, the Ming rebuilt the wall out of stone and brick after tearing down the old wall taking particular care to fortify their capital Beijing, where walls were 26 ;feet (8m) high and 30 (9m) feet thick. Soldiers could march along at the top.Guard Towers were placed along every peak, dip, and turn. Messages were sent from tower to tower on horses galloping at 26 miles an hour. In 1644, the barbarian “Manchus” broke through the Great Wall and conquered China. With the Cannon invented, there was no need for the Great Wall, neglected, it began to fall into ruin. In 1912, the Manchu government was overthrown and China became a republic. The wall was eroded from man and nature. ( You can’t see the Great Wall from space.)
